The Big Bash 2018
Five teams, seven a-side, six overs per team per game, ten games altogether, starting at 10.30 and finishing about 7.30. This year’s “Big Bash” went to the final ball of the day, which brought an end to a great day of cricket. The wonderful weather made sure the bar was kept busy, and there were plenty of burgers and hot dogs to fuel the athletes and spectators.
Chilmark beat Dorset Knockers from Iwerne Minster and last year’s winners The Tisbury Knightwatchmen but were held to a draw by the Old Fonthillians with both sides finishing on exactly 50 runs in a thrilling tie.
This meant they were undefeated when they came to their last game, but if they lost then the trophy would go to their opponents the Weeping Willows. The WWs posted a modest 51 off their 6 overs but restricted Chilmark’s progress thanks to some tight bowling and fielding, leaving them a challenging 17 to win off the final over and then 1 required of the last ball. Chilmark made it in a great finish to a great day, played in fine spirit. Plenty of runs, wickets and fielding all day. Good cricket all round.
In presenting the trophy, tournament organiser thanked everyone who had helped behind the scenes and reminded everyone that local charity CLEVAH (Creating Learning Experiences aVailable At Hospital) would benefit from the money raised through the players’ match fees, the raffle and some of the bar profits. As in previous years, one of the rules of the competition was that each team had to field at least one junior player. This year Archie Moore was named as Junior Player of the tournament. Another good day at The Park.
