Fonthill end April in style

FPCC finished April with two positive performances. Weekend captain James Parton was unable to take part due to injury but was pleased to be able to give this match report after observing the whole game from the scorer’s table.

“Another fantastic win by FPCC today. The Authors’ XI won the toss and elected to bat. Keith Edwards took an early wicket and bowled well in a master stroke by stand-in skipper Rupert Murray opening with the slow left-armer. The visitors batted well thereafter with solid partnerships throughout amassing a formidable 207 in 35 overs. In reply – after an excellent Fonthill tea - FPCC lost Dave Roberts very early on to the thinnest of edges caught behind, with Jeremy Quarrie following shortly after. However a strong partnership between Ewen Moore (74) and Ed Hobbs (68) led the team to the verge of victory with captain Murray hitting the winning runs with just 8 balls to spare. A great team effort all round with all players contributing to a superb victory, in front of a good crowd.”

This followed the win again local rivals Chilmark midweek with the visitors 15 short of the Fonthill total of 135 in failing light in a good-humoured and well contested match. Ironically, this was also a win with midweek captain Ashley Major unable to play due to injury.

Thanks to Kate Pendlenton who just happened to be passing the ground and forwarded some excellent pictures. There were also some appreciative comments after the match from both players and spectators alike.

“Fantastic match everyone. A real privilege to play in such a strong side too against a very decent opposition. A great day’s cricket – still buzzing!”

“Great what a post-Covid return to normality at FPCC can do. A great start to the season – let’s keep it going! Some fine batting strokes, the like of which you’d pay good money for. Superb knocks Messrs Hobbs and Moore and swashbuckling stroke-play by Jeremy. Also wonderful to see Fonthill legends Helen and Jimmy Street back on the ground. Ground looks awesome – big thanks to Mark and all who’ve invested hour upon hour to contribute to it. Heroes one and all, including JP on scorebook, selflessly setting the example and leading when not even on the field of play.”

“Well done everyone. A great performance against a decent side and well-skippered Rupert. An all round great day at Fonthill”

“Wow the ground and wicket: both wonderful. Thanks to all involved. 416 runs in 70 overs! Hats off to all.”

“Another good crowd on the ground today and fantastic to see so many young families all so well behaved – including the moms.”

“Thanks to Dave and ladies behind the bar and tea counter – you know who you are.”

We look forward to more great cricket - and more hyperbole - over the coming weeks.
