The 2023 Season ends

Twenty three members turned out to play in the final game of the season, an intra-Club match between the Weekend Rockets led by Howard Smith and the Midweek Superchargers under Ed Hobbs. Before that though we posed for the annual Club photograph and the captains presented the end-of season awards. They spoke of how good it was to see so many new members playing regularly this season and thanked everyone for their contributions and for supporting the team of captains so well. The Batting award went to Henry Comyn, the Bowling award to Malick Kudmany (who managed to achieve two five-fors this season), and Leigh Godfrey received the Fielding award. Finn Edwards was named Young Player of the Year and Ed Hobbs as Most Valuable Player.

Mark Mikurenda was also presented with the Club Member of the Year shield. We also paused for a minute's silence in memory of Mike Neal who died very recently and had been a very supportive and also generous vice-President over the years.

The cricket followed, the Rockets making 176 off their 35 overs with Charlie Prior scoring an elegant half-century with shots all round the wicket. In reply, the Superchargers progressed steadily, but wickets fell too. It was a close-run thing but with 21 required off the last 24 balls the odds favoured the chasers and Dan Brickell saw them through with another fifty.

A barbecue followed in the crepuscular air, ably tended by John Grinstead, having been organised by Howard and Alison Smith and funded by the Club. By 7.30 the light was beginning to fade and everyone helped to clear up and head home after another good day at the end of another good season at FPCC. We start again in six months.
